"Better to light a candle for one lost dog than to curse the darkness of man's indifference. Saving just one dog won't change the world, but it surely will change the world for that one dog."

DUDLEY DO-RIGHT

Our heartworm positive Dudley Do-Right was returned to us due to a change of circumstances. His new person, Nicholas, received an out-of-state job offer (who can turn one of those down in these hard times?), and we thought it best if Dudley returned to Leslie, as he was very happy here. As a matter of fact, he stopped his piddling as soon as he got back! His herbal heartworm treatment continues and so far so good. Heartguard is also being given and Leslie and the veterinarian continue to monitor Dudley's health very closely.

Dudley is a playful, sweet, obedient boy about three to five years of age. It's hard to tell when a dog is living wild on a hillside among other wild dogs, without food, water or care -- unless some compassionate passerby happens to notice! You could not ask for a sweeter lovebug who also happens to know about doggie doors, crates, cars, yards and he also knows not to chew on anything! How did a basset like Dudley ever end up living abandoned on a hillside?! I know "Dud" would just love a home with kind, gentle folks who do NOT have loud or harsh voices . . . it's obvious someone like that in his past abused him terribly. We thank you for reading about Dudley. If you have love and compassion in your heart for this precious boy, give us a shout by calling 406-207-0765, or filling out the application form on our site, and Leslie will get right back to you.

CABOOSE and MOUSE

ADOPTED!

Text & pics coming soon

FLYNN

Flynn was adopted but, through no fault of his own, was unceremoniously returned to us. He remains the young, playful, sweet, healthy, house trained boy that he was when he was adopted, and he still loves everyone. Flynn enjoys car rides, uses a doggie door, and is once again hoping to find a fun-loving, young family who'll happily play with him. He's neutered, UTD on shots, wormed, and heartworm negative.

KUDOS

ADOPTED

Kudos is a basset/pit bull mix with the sweetest nature. She's a spayed, seven-year-old bed warmer for anyone who'll let her snuggle. Up-to-date on her vaccinations, Kudos is a healthy, housebroken snuggle-bug who gets along great with cats and other dogs -- she just can't be around any livestock smaller than a horse or cow, especially not foals, calves or lambs. But if you don't live on a ranch or farm -- no problem! She's always been genuinely affectionate and people-oriented. Her former ranching family is now looking to rehome her into a loving -- shall we say more "citified"? -- home with children. Kudos loves the kids!

LADYBUG

Ladybug came from a sad situation. She wasn't given her proper due as a Princess, as she deserves! This healthy, spayed, five-year-old, black basset mix is just precious. She's very timid, but loves people, once she knows you won't drag her around on her back. Like I said, she wasn't given her proper due as a Princess.

Ladybug now comes into the house to spend quiet time with the gang here, and she gets along nicely with dogs, cats, and is now accustomed to horses. Her middle name is "Shy", but with proper love and attention she can become a very special part of anyone's household.

This little lady also has an adorable one- year-old basset mix son, Freckles, who you can see listed above.

LADY AND PEGGY

ADOPTED

Peggy and Lady with Leslie and Friends

Lady

Lady and Peggy are now once again up for adoption together. You may recall that was the deal when they originally came into the shelter. But Peggy became very ill and was moved into the "permanent residents" area of the shelter, leaving Lady to be adopted alone. However, after months of treatment with special food and nutrients, Peggy's lab values are now normal, showing her kidneys are healthy and stable. So, she and Lady are once again up for adoption together!

Lady's around seven years of age, but still playful. She’s housetrained, healthy and just an all-round doll. She loves to bark at cats, and that’ll drive ya crazy. So a home without cats is a must.

PEGGY

Here's Peggy doing what she does best . . . hangin' around! We were right -- when she was ill, she benefited tremendously from enjoying our living room with the rest of the gang, and our huge, new "Creek Crossing" and lovely back yard, which is maintained for all the houndies here. She's now recovered beautifully. We love her dearly, and are so happy that, once again, she and Lady will be able to go together, once they find that perfect "forever" home.

PERMANENT RESIDENTS of the "HOUNDIE HOMESTEAD"

The following loveable and charming bassets are considered by our Board to be unadoptable and are therefore permanent residents of Basset Rescue of Montana's "Houndie Homestead".

MINNIE

Oh! Goodbye, my sweetest little love!

Minnie now rests at the Rainbow Bridge. Everyone deeply misses her here at the Houndie Homestead. We all loved her beyond love. After spending most of her life abused in puppy mills, she developed kidney disease. Finally, despite our best efforts, they failed. May this sweetest soul rest in peace, until we meet again. I LOVED HER MORE THAN WORDS CAN EVER TELL.

"Thank you!" to Chris, Julie, and Dale in Libby for all their compassionate care for Minnie 'til she got here. Also, I must thank Helena Poist for her endless devotion to saving precious dogs like this.

MINNIE WAS A JOYOUS BLESSING TO US ALL!

Wiley

Farewell, Wiley!

*Wiley Coyote is now At the Rainbow Bridge. He was doing so very poorly, I couldn't allow him to suffer any longer. He would cry and cry while trying to nestle, and his mental and emotional outlook and attitude had changed drastically. I knew it was his time, and so did he. Wiley was found years ago in the middle of a Washington state highway. From that time I cared for him deeply, and with love and devotion, helped make his life a long and happy one. I miss him terribly, but I know he's now free from pain and so much happier playing at The Bridge with all his bygone friends.

LUCY

Goodbye, Lucy!

UPDATE: Lucy has passed on to The Rainbow Bridge . . . her time with us was too short, and she will be deeply missed! Click on the thumbnail below to read Leslie's memorial.

Sophia "Sophie" Loren

Sophia ("Sophie")is just that, the Sophia Loren of bassets. And just like her namesake, she's aging beautifully and is a show girl, even though she's completely blind. Sophie is in a safe yard here at Basset Rescue of Montana, and she knows every inch of it. When out on the rescue's ten acres, she puts her nose to the ground and boy, is she off and running. She actually tries to herd the horses from her side of the fence (thank goodness) and when she sneaks under a certain part of the gate, she eats whatever she finds in the corrals . . . yikes! A TRUE RANCH BASSET, INDEED! Her favorite morning thing is, once she wakes up in my bedroom, she comes out from underneath my foot stool and wiggles her butt something fierce until I notice and scratch it. She is such a hoot! I love her dearly. Sophie came from the Bozeman, Montana shelter, where she was dumped because she had tumors. Thank God Basset Rescue of Montana has her now, safe and, for now, sound. Sophie finally had her lipoma removed July 5, 2007 by Dr. Rick Sherr from Great Falls, Montana. Dr. Sherr is a wonderful surgeon who does remarkable work. THANK YOU TO A WONDERFUL, CARING MAN FOR HELPING BASSET SOPHIA!

Colbee

Adopted by Leslie Ames

Colbee is one of the best rescues in the house. He gets along so well with everyone that Leslie decided he needed to stay! He is such a wonderful, happy boy who greets everyone with his bent tail just a-waggin wildly, and then afterward is so content to be just "one of the gang". After receiving only a few inquiries about him, and all those either had small kids under seven or had no fenced yard for him . . . We decided to just give him a permanent home here at Basset Rescue of Montana.

Thorbus

Thorbus has also been classified as a permanent resident of Basset Rescue of Montana, along with Sophia and Colbee Ames.
